Living Lively: Returning from the Pandemic

Golden Oak, Leah Seidel, Aging well

Are you an older adult who has been impacted by the pandemic?

Meaning that over the last year, you were isolated and didn't get out as much as you used to and now, you’re noticing that you’ve lost your muscular strength, your balance has decreased, and now you're walking around feeling truly like an old person, even though you're not old.

In the recent months, I’ve heard this again and again.

I just had an initial consultation with a client and we started talking about the golden years of her life. And what she said to me was shocking. She said, "I thought the golden years of my life were going to be this shiny, vibrant time where I got to spend time with my family and do what I wanted to do, living the life that I wanted. And what I'm finding as we’re coming out of the pandemic is that my golden years have now been tarnished."

In the last year, she had lost so much muscular strength that she couldn't stand up and sit down out of a chair unassisted and she can’t walk without stumbling. That's huge when you talk about quality of life, toileting independently, going out in public, getting in and out of a chair or a car.  That's your freedom and your independence.

I'm Leah Seidel.  I'm an exercise physiologist, and for the last 15 years, I've been working with adults to reclaim their balance, to move with confidence, to strengthen their body and to live the life that they want in their golden years.

I knew that during the pandemic, exercise was more important than ever because we weren't doing our daily activities.  We weren't going out to the grocery store, or going for long walks, we weren't getting out and going to a restaurant or visiting family.  All these day-to-day activities build muscular strength and helps our bodies stay strong as we age.

I started thinking about what I know about older adults; fall prevention, strength, balance, aches & pains, staying independent and having a high quality of life.

I compiled it all into a 12 week online coaching program called, “The Living Lively Method.”

The first step is to soothe your aches and pains, because here's the thing. If you're in pain, pain is all consuming.  Pain will restrict you from doing what you want.

So, the first thing we address in The Living Lively Method, is how to soothe your aches and pains. In this section I’ll teach you how to decrease stiffness so you can stop feeling like Frankenstein in the morning, how to boost your energy, and how to reduce aches and pains so you can enjoy your day.

Step two, of the Living Lively Method, you learn how to stabilize and strengthen our bodies to move with confidence.

If you are lacking muscular strength, your balance will decrease and when that happens, you're not going to feel confident going out into the world.

This is no way to live.

A lot of people don’t realize that much like a muscle, balance can be trained and improved.  The problem is, they don’t know where to start.

That brings us to the second step: Stabilize and Strengthen your Body to Move with Confidence.

I’ll teach you my Fall Proof Plan so you can reduce your risk and fear of falling.  You’ll also get my Strengthen to Stabilize Guide which shows you step by step how to strengthen your body so you can continue to fully participate in your life.

Finally, Step three of the Living Lively Method is: Soar into the Golden Years of Your Life.

The definition of retirement is, “solitude, isolation, loneliness, and withdrawal.” So our first task is to redefine your retirement.

You must have a vision so that you can fill your life with meaning and purpose.  This part of the program will show you (no matter your age), how to set your vision, connect and contribute to your community, and keeping your momentum so you can live independently without ever being a burden on your family.
